Clipse f/ Heron, Stimuli, King Pin & Shaliek Rivers :: "On My Shit"
From Hell Hath No Fury (Arista; 2006)

Still not the Neptunes, but close enough. Ostensibly produced by Jay Esco, “On My Shit” exudes the easy mystery of a top-form Neptunes track, booming bass kicks at the start of each measure and rolling bong/o thuds the rest of the time. It rides a single synth lick that keeps your speaker’s tweeter humping the dust cover, but this isn’t about the beat; this is a Posse Cut, and if you put this shit on repeat every rhyme would one-up the one before it until your ears eventually got so intimidated they would become sentient and choose to not listen anymore out of fear.

Pusha’s verse is first and, in my opinion, best, eviscerating Tip’s smooth-shit-talking for an unassailably menacing chest-thumping. “A dream state/ Revvin the RPMs / I see the hate / And understand from whence it stems,” he seethes. There are no threats here, but the braggadocio comes with its back so defiantly against the wall that this may as well be Mobb Deep. No one is safe from Pusha’s ire, spitting dismissively, “Good riddance to any chick who doesn’t speak / Musta thought the Porsche was a Civic.” The closest this gets to straight-up intimidation is when Stimuli explains with a grim smirk, “I just don’t talk shit / That’s why I left the battles alone / I talk, flip, shoot / I’m like camera phones.” This is where I close the review by noting how much I’m looking forward to Hell Hath No Fury, how I can’t stop listening to “Mr. Me Too,” how many blogs I have, etc. And all that shit’s true, but it’s also getting kinda played out to note. Kinda like it was to note the freshness of a new Neptunes track three years ago. Successors to the throne, heirs to the title: most interesting thing happening in the mainstream? Too early for me to tell, but there’s a reason Darth Vader took out Obi-Wan, if you get what I’m saying. Or if you don’t, repeat after me: Uh-huh, uh-huh … uh-huh, uh-huh. E-mail me with your yup.
