Future Of The Left :: "Manchasm"
From Curses (Too Pure; 2007)

All ye would-be ballpoint pen thieves, prostitute killers named Dave, and silicone-enhanced rock bands, you've been warned. Sheriff Falkous is riding back into town with a new band, and, from the sound of this leaked track from the forthcoming Curses, with a flamethrower loaded with enough snark to torch every recalcitrant moppet who would dare stand in his way.

"Manchasm" essentially confirms what was already pretty evident from the older demos on Future of the Left's MySpace page and the more recent "Fingers Become Thumbs" single, that Andy Falkous's new band is virtually indistinguishable from his old one. And for that we should all be completely grateful, for if ever a band existed that imploded way before they received their proper due, it was Mclusky. In fact, the only lineup alteration between the two bands lies in the bass player, with Kelson Louis Tregurtha Mathias (yup) replacing Jonathan Chapple in what was rumored to be a particularly acrimonious split.

As such, "Manchasm" swipes a slew of moves from the Mclusky playbook, and for those us utterly deprived of Falkous's unique brand of Pixies meets Monthy Python rock assholery, it feels soooo good! Past stalwarts such as Gareth Brown and Cowboy Killer Alan are given a new friend in the guise of ghost hunter Mark Foley. Within the thump of what has to be Albini-drums, fuzz guitar, and a corny one-note keyboard riff -- despite Falkous once stating that keyboards are what you use to type - Foley is eventually joined by "very pretty pussycat" Colin, a feline introduced in a round-robin singalong akin to the "sex criminal" bit in "She Will Only Bring You Happiness." An "audience" is reminded that "every minute matters!" and a nameless fellow wants nothing more than a "detonator" with which to blow shit up.

And it rocks too!
