CMG: Now, and Always, Hiring

Yup: our perpetual search for talented writers to join the CMG fold—the most glamorous and well-respected of all online music criticism, um, folds—continues! Have you been reading this site for years, or even a few tremendous minutes, and you’re pretty sure you have something to bring to the staff? We urge you to get in touch. Record reviews, DailyOps, feature articles—whatever level of involvement you’re interested in, if your writing is good, we’re interested.

2011 Year-End Discussion Topic!

With our year-end coverage soon over—which we’ll be celebrating at the CMG mansion, as always, with a weeks-long power nap—we’re once again bracing ourselves and, ignoring our collective Gut, asking for your feedback. Awards, the Top 50 list, all that we’ve unforgivably neglected to include on either, and everything else this year, including our recent ‘80s Fantasy Covers Podcast, which we love dearly: let us know what you think. Either in the comments section below, on Facebook, or on Twitter (@cmgzine). You can’t really complain on our Tumblr, but it’s worth checking out anyway.

Fantasy Covers: The '80s, Part One

Good news and bad news, folks. Good news: our ’80s Fantasy Covers Podcast is still happening, and it’s easily one of the best we’ve curated yet. (See below for three reasons why.) Which makes the bad news worse: unfortunately, it won’t be going up today, as we’ll need a few more weeks to deal with some…let’s just say “unexpected technical difficulties.” So, no, we can’t post the podcast just yet, which totally sucks; but, yes, it’s still on the way and awesome and completely free.

Bump: Behold! The CMG Tumblr!

Finally, a reason for Tumblr to exist.

In case you somehow missed the announcements on our Twitter and Facebook pages (in which case: we’re very disappointed in you, but keep reading for a way to make it up to us), we’ve relaunched our Tumblr (cokemachineglow.tumblr.com).

Bump: Cokemachineglow's Turntable.fm Room

Fuck whatever it is you were planning to do or get done this week. This month. ‘Til question marks, really. If you’ve not already succumbed to the siren call of Turntable.fm and its bread-and-butter premise, “play music together”—and unless you’re some useless slob like me doing it where no one cares—grab your headphones and get ready to worry about how much of your day is going to go down to the drain and whether or not your co-workers are going to find you out and snitch.

Fantasy Covers Podcast Vol. 1: 2006

Think back, way back, to 2006: Twitter was just a fledgling start-up, merely hinting at the promise of insufferable feuds to come; Timbaland was fucking everywhere, and for the most part killing it; LOST still had some of us fooled into thinking, or maybe just hoping, that it wouldn’t end up a flaming shitfest beyond our wildest fears; the International Astronomical Union finally took Pluto—widely known as the asshole of the Kuiper belt—down a notch, demoting it to “dwarf planet”; the “Shania Twain defense” became an actual thing; and TIME magazine, in a cheap and oddly Lebowski-ian move, made “You” their person of the year. Um…congrats?

CMG: Possibly award-winning music crit

In case you haven’t been following our social media (which: you should make that a priority) or podcast section, we’re in the running to win CBC Radio 3’s Best Canadian Music Website Award. Or something. We’re not really sure what that means either, given that over half of our current staff isn’t Canadian: Dom resides in Portland, George and Alan live in the UK, Clay spends his days scowling out the window at Chicagoans, etc. Regardless, we were founded in Newfoundland, are named after a Gord Downie album, and Scott’s now based in Halifax, so that seems good enough for the CBC.

Top 50 of 2010 Discussion Topic!

Now that our Year-End Awards—all 40 of ‘em, capped off by the most addictively giddy of ringtones, as a thank you for reading—have wrapped up and we slowly drag out our Top 50 of 2010, we’d love to know what you think of it all. Guesses for what’s to come? Got some anger to vent over what we’ve included or, more likely, haven’t? Maybe you just want to acknowledge that our list, no matter the opinions we’re baiting with this very post, is infallible and absolute? (No need, we already know.) Or, hey, how about the Double Fantasy Podcast we just lovingly bumped from earlier this year? Get all up in our comments section below, let us know what’s what.

CMG Year-End 2010

That time of year again, folks. As 2010 comes to a close, we’re wrapping things up here at CMG HQ. First up: the rest of this week and weekend we’ll be doing our annual Wea Culpa series of updates, where we reach back and get to a dozen or so of the overwhelming mass of records we missed. Chances of us finally writing up that album you’ve been patiently visiting week in and week out hoping we’d cover? Better than zero!

CMG seeks advertising sales manager

CMG wants help, like usual. But this time, it’s not of the “come write for us for free” variety. We’re looking for a qualified advertising sales manager to join our team of impoverished nebbishes to help us in our ongoing attempts to monetize the shit out of this piece. Site hits are enormous right now and we need someone with experience in online music advertising to translate those hits into valuable corporate partnerships. We’re looking to set up a basic commission-based relationship with you, which means the sky is the limit, earnings-wise. (I mean, with a few caveats, obvs.) You’ll have full partnership from the editorial staff in these initiatives, and we’re willing to work on our end to help make your job a blinding success.
