Ned Collette :: "The Laughter Across The Street"
From Jokes & Trials (Dot Dash/Remote Control; 2006)Jokes and Trials: The History of a Love Affair
07/03 – Newell moves to Melbourne, Australia, on exchange.
08/03 – Newell meets girl.
11/03 – Newell extends exchange from 1 semester to 2 semesters.
01/04 – Newell moves in with girl (quick, I know sorry Mom).
01/04 to 07/04 – Girl introduces Newell to Best Radio Station in Australia, Triple-RRR. Newell wakes up most mornings (at 6:30 AM) to Triple-RRR radio, Best Radio Station in Australia. Newell adapts to new lifestyle, likes girl, says nothing about 6:30 AM wakeups.
07/04 to 12/05 – Newell goes back to Canada to work. Sad part. Girl visits often; vice versa. Newell often streams Triple-RRR at work around 5:30 PM when morning show is on in Australia and gets nostalgic. Friends make fun of Newell, call him “gay.”
01/06 – Newell says “screw you guys.” Moves back to Australia forever. Resumes unreasonably early-waking lifestyle with girl.
05/06 (approx) – Newell gets CD in mail by Ned Collette, says “This cover is pretty dull.” Girl agrees. CD was in same package as new Mountain Goats album. Newell has set priorities, backburners anonymous dull CD cover CD.
06/06 – Girl says “What is this song we always wake up to now.” Newell listens closely to radio, discovers that it is Ned Collette’s “Laughter Across the Street”, takes note of good song (argues that it is perfect song for sleeping in to).
06/06-present – Newell and Girl wake up at least once per week to “Laughter Across the Street.”
07/06 - Triple-RRR reaffirms status as Best Radio Station in Australia by making Jokes and Trials “Album of Week.”
07/06 – Newell writes Melbourne-based Dot-Dash Records, remembers that they put out New Buffalo’s album; they are therefore good people. Newell requests copy of Ned Collette album for review. Dot-Dash replies: “Hey dummy, you already have it.” Embarrassment, Newell blushes for the sole benefit of his laptop.
07/06 – Newell PURCHASES LEGALLY 15 copies of Ned Collette album. Sends one to each cokemachineglow.com staffer through NON-INTERNET REAL MAIL SYSTEM with note: “this is really good.” Nearly instantaneously, Scott replies by REAL MAIL: “yeah, it is.”
08/06 – CMG staff on staff board where no music is traded illegally but where we discuss albums we purchase for each other and send to one another in the REAL MAIL have conversation that goes like this: “Guys, does anyone like Ned Collette? It’s really good” (Aaron) -- [3 days later] – “Yeah” (Clay) -- [2 more days] -- “Yeah” (Scott) -- [3 more days] -- “I know, wow huh?” (Aaron) -- [1 day] -- “Yeah” (Mark) -- [3 weeks] -- “So, this is waaaaay good” (Greenwald) [3 minutes] “Yeah” (Scott) -- [8 minutes] -- “Yeah” (Clay) -- [1 day] -- “Yeah. I think this is going to make our year-end list” (Aaron) -- [7 minutes] -- “Yeah” (Scott) -- [2 days] -- “Yeah, awesome” (Baban) -- [3 minutes] -- “I ran to this yesterday and the "do do do" part kicked in toward the end of my second mile, I felt like I could have run on water..” (Eric) -- [5 minutes] -- “Eric, you’re going to have to learn to be more to-the-point if you want to keep writing for us, I mean, what is that shit, who’s going to read all that?” (Clay).
08/06-10/06 – Jokes and Trials plays almost every night in Newell’s and Girl’s apartment. No one complains.
10/06 – Clay reviews Ned Collette album. Newell thinks: “78%, that’s about right” because “Some people might not like this as much as me.” Weeks pass, Newell listens to Ned Collette album again. Realizes that sometimes conservatism sucks and that if the rap guy, the eclectic guy, the sunny harmonic pop guy who also likes dark gothic shit, the folkie, the Indian Chief and the Construction Worker, Mr Eko, and him, all like the Ned Collette album, then that is no fluke.
11/06 – Newell at loss for words about how pretty “Laughter Across the Street” is, and knowing reader can download it for free from cokemachineglow by grace of Dot-Dash, writes self-indulgent diary piece about how some music is perfect enough to enrich your day-to-day life in small increments, over a long period of time, and eventually will appeal to pretty much anyone with a soul, even Mark Abraham. Hopes readers understand after hearing song. Hopes people listen to lyrics. Apologizes for wanky song review.
