From Street Love (Universal; 2007)
I’m still shaking from this hit’s repercussions, still coming to terms with my newfound desire to hear the rest of Lloyd’s sophomore album. We’re talking about Lloyd from N-Toon here. We’re talking about the same Lloyd who made us laugh every time he uttered a line of dialogue in his “Southside” video, and it wasn’t because he was telling jokes.
“You” is silly, too, but awesome silly. The kind of pants-drooping-past-the-knees, don’t-give-a-fuck, I’ll-kiss-Birdman-if-I-want-to ridiculousness that Lil Wayne’s making his fortune on these days. Guess who’s guesting. So this track’s unfettered, charismatic, fun, smooth, and still kind of cool: the balance Weezy braves every time he talks about his daddy or takes on Hov on Hov’s own beat. On “You” he raps his easy, infectious cadences and tells his girl he loves her like “good food.” It’s a step up on Lloyd’s game, though, which consists of pleas (“I’m in need of love”) and a faux pas or two (“She’s fine, too / But I want you”). Still, if there’s little charm in the substance, it’s oozing by the bucketful off the skin. The synth’s astringent to the tight drums and the gossamer flutters of Lloyd’s croon-job, which basically slays every time he hits the high notes. Weezy doesn’t just sound at home, he sounds like he was born here; the video’s worth watching if only for the moment where he and Lloyd start jigging after the song’s sole catch phrase: “Long hair, don’t cut it.”
In sum, this is the best sleaze-pop single since the “Ignition” remix. And, oh yeah, the “You” remix is almost as good, featuring Andre 3000 and Nas and running through a sample of Spandau Ballet’s “True” like P.M. Dawn never happened. What? Yes.
