From DJ Benzi's Get Right (Amalgam Entertainment; 2007)
Essentially Lil Wayne's "1,2 Yall" with an improved hook and a couple introductory verses from the Cool Kids, "Gettin' It" is nothing new and yet almost everything exciting about rap music right now. "Everything" = not much, but I'll take what I can get. This past weekend Clay Purdom and I were discussing the usual: Clipse, Wu-Tang, Diamond D, whether the Cool Kids' debut will be any good, and Lil Wayne. I was saying something about Andre 3000 ending up guest rapper of the year. Clay said, "Lil Wayne." I asked, "But is Lil Wayne ever really a guest rapper?"
Case in point, DJ Benzi has this track labeled as "featuring Lil Wayne," but Weezy F. spends as much time repeating "Baby" as the Cool Kids do on all of their rapping. Hell, the contrast here shows amply enough that Lil Wayne's not even rapping anymore. Then there's also Weezy's cackling about shit like being high enough to see spaceships and wearing Marc Jacobs. And that's all part of just one of his three ridiculous verses. The Cool Kids might as well have been another nice production trick that Benzi used for polish, like the vocal cuts he added to the hook. That said, "1,2 Yall" was a song that only needed a couple such slick touches to rise from minor Weezy to major Weezy. So say word to Lil Wayne featuring the Cool Kids, and salute as Weezy continues the court jester's ascension: towards delirious ubiquity. His shtick is fool's gold, but that doesn't mean he's not shining.
